He studied at Langgar Malay School, before going to Pak Wan Sulaiman Religious School in Alor Setar, then Pondok Tok Kenali in Kelantan and returned to Kedah in 1928 and continued study at the Tok Janggut (Haji Ahmad Janggut) hut in Langgar. When he was 19 years old, he was sent to study at Darul Ulum, Mecca and studied with many scholars there. When he was 28 years old, he returned to Langgar and continued his studies at Tok Janggut (Hj Ahmad) lodge. When he returned from Mecca he taught at Raudhatul Ulum which was sponsored by his father Haji Salleh, led by his brother Hj Hussein. He then established an Al-Najah Madrasah on land owned by his son-in-law in Kubang Lembu, Jitra. He also started to pioneer modernization in religious education. The madrasah also has a library and facilities for leisure. He himself also teaches silat. Haji Omar was also active in SEBERKAS and then through UMNO was also involved in the struggle for independence. He participated in the first election and became a representative of the Jitra-Padang Terap area and then became a member of the State Government Meeting Council. Haji Omar was blessed with 10 children from his two wives. The results of his education among his children include Prof Dato Dr Asmah, Prof Dato Dr Azizi and Dato Dr Affifudin.
