Rural infrastructure investments financed by European money and made by salvation are no longer a novelty in Romania, but the case of Pielești, a commune located in the metropolitan area of Craiova, is much more than that. While the mayor and the executor of the work claim that the sewage network was done as per the book, the head of the local water and sewer company refuses to take over the investment, accusing that the system broke down before the inauguration. Tired of waiting, the locals connected to the network illegally, and the sewage began to back up, spreading unpleasant smells. Instead of admitting the problems and looking for solutions, mayor Irinel Irimescu (PMP) allied himself with PSD and USR councilors and decided to dismiss the head of the water and sewer company, whom they reproached for reporting the problems from the sewage network. The local council meeting in which the dismissal was planned, however, took an unexpected turn, turning into a skit taken from Caragiale's dramaturgy. ----------------------------- Recorder is an online publication built by a team of journalists around these principles: honest journalism, done with passion and put in public service.
