There are cars that have gone down in history for their beauty, their performance, their technical contributions or their sporting achievements. And others, simply, for being almost unbreakable. Like these 10 that I bring you in this video, truly eternal cars. Not like the “Pure Tech” engines that we talk about at the end. #cars #classiccars #oldcars These 10 models don’t have much to do with each other, but they do have something in common besides their robustness. You can still see them, especially in rural areas, but not as pampered and restored classics, but as the “everyday” car of the current user… cars that last 20, 30 or 40 years… and still work! When we talk about robust cars, we all think of cars that don’t break down. A success. But the age of cars is measured in other ways. For example, by the deterioration of the exterior and interior appearance. 1. Citroën C15 (1984). The C15 was not, it was completely different and was nothing more than a Citroën Visa van, but very well made and with an advertising slogan that for me is one of the most fortunate: “It can carry everything”. 2. Seat Panda-Marbella (1980 and 1986). For me, Panda and Marbella are the same car, because the Marbella is a Panda retouched to be perceived as different, the result of the fights between Fiat and Seat… which Seat won. And simplicity is a virtue, as demonstrated by its designer, none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro, with an attractive, practical and beautiful body despite being very simple, as demonstrated by the flat windscreen. 3. Lada Niva (1976). For the vast majority, it is the best vehicle produced in the former Soviet Union. And as I said at the beginning, it is a car that may age quickly in appearance, but it is a rock. 4. Mercedes S-Class W140 (1991). I remember when I tried that car for the first time, and on top of that the V12 that gave as many KW as the BMW 750, horsepower… typical piquancy of both brands. 300 HP for the BMW versus 400 HP for the Mercedes. Incredible suspensions, double glazing, huge size… it was criticized for being “excessive” at the time, but I’m sorry, maybe I’m nostalgic or a purist, but for me it’s the best Mercedes S Class by far. 5. Nissan Patrol (1982). The “Patrullero” appeared in 1951 but I have chosen the third generation, for two reasons: It was the first to be exported in very significant numbers and the first manufactured in Europe, specifically in Spain. 6. Renault 4 (1961). A long-lived car as it appeared in 1961 in France and was manufactured until 1992 in Slovenia: 31 years in total. We made a video about Suzuki and “nice” cars… this is one of them. You may or may not like it, but it is a hit. 7. Saab 900 (1978). For many “saabistas” or “saaberos”, the best Saab in history. And they may be right. We are talking, of course, about the first generation 900, not the one that appeared in 1994 when Saab was already owned by GM. 8. Suzuki Santana (1985). Again, I have opted for the one made in Spain, the second generation, although everything said is valid for the entire Suzuki Jimny saga born in 1970. How well designed and well made this car was! Honestly, it was a delight to see its underbody, its electrical system covered in rubber, its screws… even when you saw the engine disassembled, it oozed quality… 9. VW Beetle (1938). I am not a total fan of this car, but it is fair to acknowledge its great quality that makes it an example of reliability and robustness. Its greatest enemy was clumsy mechanics. In South America this did not happen, they understood and understand them very well, better than in Spain. 10. Toyota Hilux (1968). The wonderful thing about this model is that it is known and has a reputation for being robust throughout the world, of course in Japan, a lot in the USA, throughout America, in Asia, in Australia… one of the most international cars in history. Conclusion. No matter how we look at it, robustness and simplicity usually go hand in hand. It is not the only recipe, because in this top ten there are a couple of cars of quite a high level, such as the Mercedes and the Saab. Today's cars are surely the best in history for efficiency, comfort and safety… but as a mechanic friend of mine says… “they have so many things and so complicated… that something breaks”. And, in my opinion, he is somewhat right, don't you think? Car of the day. I have chosen the Hilux. The truth is that any of this list deserves to be in our Hermetic Garage. In fact, for one reason or another, some of them have already been “Car of the Day” before. But every time I watch a “newscast” there is rarely a time when one of these cars doesn’t appear, whether it’s in a war, a flood, a fire or some other disaster. And there it is, working hard and, as an advertisement for a department store said: “They give a lot and ask for little.” That’s it.
