Reportage - A day with the fire department: Jannis has been a firefighter with the Braunschweig professional fire department for four years. Together with Pastor Chris, who experiences the everyday life of a firefighter for a day, they face exciting and challenging tasks. From fires and accidents to operations at dizzying heights and catching dangerous animals such as snakes and spiders - every operation requires the utmost concentration. During an advanced training course at the Natural History Museum, they learn how to safely identify and handle such animals. In 2023, the Braunschweig fire department responded to almost 5,300 operations, while the emergency services were alerted over 24,000 times. All emergency calls are received at the control center, where the dispatchers assess the situation at lightning speed and coordinate the appropriate emergency services. A maximum of 9.5 minutes may pass from the emergency call to arrival at the scene - every second counts. The service begins early with the inspection of vehicles and equipment, because everything has to be ready for use at all times. Constant training is a must so that firefighters can act quickly and precisely in an emergency.
