It is better known as multiple sclerosis, or MS for short. It is the most common neurological disease in young adults and owes its nickname to the multitude of symptoms that MS can manifest itself in. Impairments such as visual disturbances, coordination difficulties or paralysis often occur in phases and lead to increasing disabilities, which can mean mild to severe restrictions in everyday life, but also a complete need for care. But how does MS arise? Around 250,000 Germans suffer from the degenerative disease of the CNS, which leads to damage and destruction of the nerve fibers. Since the exact causes of MS are not yet known with certainty, there is no cure. However, drug therapies in combination with psychological support and rehabilitation measures such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy can have a positive influence on the course of the disease and help to maintain quality of life. How does MS progress? Whether, when and how severely certain MS symptoms occur and how quickly the disease progresses depends on the location and number of plaques in the CNS; an individual prognosis is hardly possible. Roughly speaking, one third of those affected experience only minor impairments. Another third have to live with more severe impairments, but maintain their independence and sometimes also the ability to work. The last third become dependent on care due to severe disabilities. In addition, different types of progression can be distinguished from one another: the most common is the relapsing-remitting course, at around 90%. This sets in particularly in the first 10 years of the disease and at an early age. It is characterised by sudden onset of symptoms that last for several days or weeks and then partially or completely subside. Such attacks occur at very irregular intervals; weeks, months or years can pass before the next one. In around half of MS patients, the remitting form of the disease gives way to the so-called secondary progressive form after 10-15 years. After the disease initially progresses in attacks, the disabilities gradually increase. The third form is primary chronic progressive MS. In a minority of MS patients, a constant increase in disabilities can be observed from the onset of the disease, without individually definable attacks. This is particularly common in patients with a late onset of the disease after the age of 40. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl" you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics related to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies. ▬ Even more videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Nerve pain - causes and therapy: https://bit.ly/StarkeNervenschmerzen_...
