"Does beauty make you happy?" This question leads Mona Vetsch to young people who dream of a modeling career, overweight men and women who go beyond society's ideal of beauty, and a blind woman whose sense of beauty is her nose. ???? At a casting in one of Switzerland's largest modeling agencies, Mona Vetsch meets young people who all hope to one day be able to make a living from their beauty. For example, Leon Bürgi. "I was often teased at school, had an inferiority complex and didn't think I was beautiful," says the commercial apprentice. The agency boss now predicts a rosy future for him. For the young man, his appearance could mean material happiness, for many others this casting will dash their hopes. 70-year-old model Carmen Meier takes it in her stride if her type is not in demand at the moment. "I now know who I am and how the business works. Nevertheless, beauty is central to me in every respect, it makes me completely happy." Alexandra Baumann cannot say the same about herself. The 41-year-old has struggled with her appearance all her life, is overweight and found herself unattractive. Since her gastric bypass operation, the kilos have fallen off and her self-esteem has started to change. But it is not that easy with the mirror of society. "I constantly have to listen to unsolicited comments about my appearance: "Eat more sweets, then your ass will get even bigger" or "A little salad and then eat it again at home," she says of her experiences with complete strangers who just chat her up. Why do overweight people not fit into society's ideas of the ideal of beauty? And does that necessarily make you unhappy? Zina Indermaur has no idea about all these discussions about appearances: she is blind. She perceives beauty primarily through her nose and hearing. "A person's beautiful voice, a subtle, pleasant smell - for me that means a deep sense of well-being." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reports by: Kathrin Winzenried Camera: Jonas Bolli, Michael Gerber, Ueli Haberstich, Christine Munz, Martin Schäppi, Adrian Stähli and Marin Suter Sound: Nicolas Adamina, Max Büchel and Simon Manetsch Editing: Simon Keller Production: Christine Rindisbacher Director: Nathalie Rufer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENTARIES AND REPORTS EVERY WEEK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ????
