In April 1546, during the late Sengoku period, Hojo Ujiyasu defeated the forces of Kanto Kanrei Uesugi and Koga Kubo in a night attack, and using his fame to pacify northern Musashi, he set his sights on a full-scale invasion of Ueno. Meanwhile, the defeated Kanto Kanrei Uesugi Norimasa retreated to his castle, Hirai Castle, and gave up on raising an army himself. He focused all his efforts on maintaining the support of the local lords who followed him, but his senior vassals, such as the Narita clan of Oshi Castle and the Fujita clan of Hanazono Castle in Chichibu County, switched sides to the Hojo one after another, and he was in no position to resist the Hojo alone.
