After Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and invaded Ukraine in 2022, the 'Baltic Sea region' has become one of the most vulnerable areas for a new conflict to erupt. In Europe, it is home to 'Kaliningrad', a breakaway Russian territory that does not border mainland Russia and is surrounded by all NATO member states. There is only the 'Suvalki Pass', a small 100-kilometer passage on the border of northern Poland and southern Lithuania that connects Kaliningrad to mainland Russia via Belarus. As the Baltics are a strategic NATO area that meets Russia's last line of defense, Kaliningrad and the Suvalki Pass are fuses waiting to explode.
