Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 – 6 January 1981) was a Scottish writer and physician. His most famous novels to Russian readers include Brodie Castle, The Stars Look Down, The Citadel, The Young Years, Shannon's Path, and The Crusader's Monument. Archibald Cronin came to the stories about Dr. Finlay, his senior colleague Dr. Cameron, and their imperturbable housekeeper Janet from a small Scottish town as an established writer, with several novels under his belt, including the one that made him famous, Brodie Castle. However, it is these tragic, funny and touching stories, full of colourful characters, that remain the writer's most popular and famous works to this day and formed the basis of a very successful BBC series that was broadcast on television from 1962 to 1971 (the first two years the scripts were written by Cronin himself). The two collections they were included in (both of which are included in the Russian edition) are still being reprinted around the world today.
