Farmers have been observing for years how the valuable humus layer in the soil is getting thinner. In Brandenburg in particular, the sandy fields show this clearly. Many farmers are now taking new approaches to save the soil and make their fields fit for the future. The already thin, fertile humus layer has been shrinking for decades, as studies by the Leibniz Center for Agricultural Landscape Research show. Farmers' livelihoods are at stake, and consumers' affordable food is at stake. Researchers and experimental farmers are resisting these developments. They are looking for solutions to the problem of the "Brandenburg sand box". Building up the humus layer is a priority. The film shows why more and more people are rediscovering the soil beneath our feet as a "life insurance policy" and which paths they are taking to bring more fertility to the sandy earth.
