Paul explains to them that the Messiah promised by John is Jesus, who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. After being baptized in the name of Jesus, they receive the Holy Spirit, manifesting spiritual gifts. This episode completes the inclusion of different groups in the New Testament church: Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles and now, John's disciples. The narrative emphasizes the need to grow in understanding and experience of the Holy Spirit, a truth that Paul reinforces by strengthening the churches he had previously established and by instructing Apollos, who, despite being eloquent and knowledgeable in the Scriptures, had an incomplete understanding of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
