We have been hearing about the waste emergency in Rome for years. After all, it is not easy to properly dispose of what is estimated to be around 1,600,209 tons of waste per year (these were the numbers in 2023 alone). With data provided by Roma Capitale and AMA in hand, we tried to understand where urban waste ends up, what were the causes that led to the emergency and what solutions are being implemented. The main problems were three: lack of an adequate number of vehicles for transporting waste and ecological operators; difficult relocation of waste after the closure of the Malagrotta landfill; lack of facilities for the disposal of separated and unseparated waste. To date, there have already been significant improvements compared to previous years, but there are still many objectives to be achieved: for example, the aim is to obtain 52% of separated waste within the next 2 years and 60% by 2028; furthermore, the construction of a waste-to-energy plant is planned in the Santa Palomba area. 00:00 Waste situation in Rome: official data 01:41 How and where is recyclable waste sorted? 03:27 The treatment of unsorted waste 04:51 The problems behind Rome's waste emergency and the solutions in place 07:50 Alternative solutions for waste disposal OUR RECOMMENDED VIDEOS • How is plastic recycled?
