The majority of those in need of care long for a home that gives them the greatest possible freedom and independence. Outpatient assisted living communities are another alternative for people with dementia who can no longer live independently at home. This is particularly true if moving to a residential facility is not desired. In an outpatient assisted living community, people with dementia can lead a largely self-determined life and at the same time receive professional care and support around the clock. Rosi Schmitt is a long-standing member of the 'Initiative Group for Outpatient Assisted Living Communities' (abWG), which is moderated by the Gerontopsychiatric Specialist Coordination (GeFa) Middle Franconia and the Specialist Office for Dementia and Care Middle Franconia. Rosi Schmitt also works as a consultant in the specialist office for caring relatives at the AWO Erlangen. She has therefore already gained extensive experience with outpatient assisted living communities, including with regard to the legal framework, practical challenges and positive effects for those affected, relatives and care services. Prof. Dr. med. Elmar Gräßel is a health services researcher and doctor and heads the Center for Medical Services Research at the University Hospital Erlangen. As project manager for the research project 'DemWG', he scientifically studied outpatient residential communities as part of an intervention study. In the webinar, Rosi Schmitt and Prof. Dr. Elmar Gräßel present the outpatient residential communities for people with dementia from both a practical and scientific perspective.
