These impacts occurred in different locations: one in the Chesapeake Bay, on the east coast of the United States, and the other in the Popigai region, in Siberia. The resulting craters, still visible today, highlight the magnitude of these events and their destructive potential. Surprisingly, however, these impacts do not appear to have caused significant changes in the evolution of climate or life on Earth. Researchers have analyzed sediments and rocks from the craters to better understand the impact of these events on the global environment. Despite the massive release of energy by ejecting material into the atmosphere, there is no evidence of mass extinctions or severe climate change associated with these events. This is in stark contrast to the impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, suggesting that the location and composition of the impacts may have played a crucial role. Studies indicate that the Chesapeake Bay was an aquatic environment at the time of the impact, which may have minimized the global atmospheric effects. In contrast, at Popigai, the impact in an area rich in graphite may have produced large quantities of industrial diamonds, but again, there is no evidence of a significant global impact. The lack of extreme climate change or mass extinctions highlights how different variables can influence the outcome of such events. These findings help scientists better understand the complexity of asteroid impacts and their consequences for Earth. While catastrophic on a local scale, the events 35 million years ago show that not all impacts have drastic global effects, depending on factors such as location, terrain composition, and impact magnitude. The research reinforces the importance of continuing to monitor potentially hazardous asteroids to anticipate their potential consequences.
