One of the most interesting and restless philosophers in the Italian and European cultural scene, Umberto Galimberti, born in Monza in 1942, is a full professor of Philosophy of History and Dynamic Psychology at Ca' Foscari University in Venice. Author of numerous scientific volumes (including «The body», «Psyche and techne. Man in the age of technology», «The disturbing guest. Nihilism and young people», «Footprints of the sacred. Christianity and the desacralization of the sacred», all published in new editions in the «Opere» series by Feltrinelli), Galimberti is also present in the cultural and social debate through timely interventions in daily and weekly newspapers, which make him an intellectual also known to the general public. A student of Karl Jaspers, Martin Heidegger and Emanuele Severino, the themes of his anthropological and philosophical research range from the relationship between body, nature and culture, to man in the age of technology, without neglecting the anxieties of the youthful condition and an emblematic theme such as madness. The singularity of his didactic approach is not so much that of giving answers but of radicalizing the questions, so that the answers are sought within the reflection and experience of individuals. From this dialogical approach also derives his "idea" of philosophy, "contrary to the Western philosophical conception, in which philosophy is structured as a logic that formalizes reality by withdrawing from the world of life, to lock itself in universities where, among initiates, knowledge is transmitted from master to disciple that has no impact on existence and on the way of conducting it". The research of the Italian philosopher and psychoanalyst therefore aims at the articulated attempt to "read" and interpret the cultural history of the West through paradigms linked to concrete experience, such as the so-called "discovery of the body" which paradoxically - Galimberti declares - the dominant culture "wants to present itself as a premise for its liberation", while instead "it is used to definitively liquidate it in the mechanism of the system and its production which, not content with exploiting the body's labor force, also exploits its force of desire, hallucinating it with those ideals of beauty, youth, health, sexuality which are then the new values to sell". All this involves profound transformations in the conception of the world and of man, of society. It forces us - says Galimberti - to review our traditional and Western concepts, for example, "of the individual, of identity, freedom, salvation, truth, meaning, purpose"; but also "those of nature, ethics, politics, religion, history". So those concepts, which fed the humanistic age, now, in the age of technology, "will have to be reconsidered, dismissed, or refounded at the root". This is ultimately the purpose of Umberto Galimberti's philosophical and ethical research, all aimed at the future, as he "tells" in the four meetings, curated by Antonio Ria. by Antonio Ria 01 The body between nature and culture 00:00 02 Man in the age of technology 24:48 03 The condition of youth 48:09 04 Madness 1:14:37 ????
