Since 1969, the Rungis market has succeeded the old Parisian Halles. It is in a suburban Parisian commune, in the Val de Marne, on an area larger than the Principality of Monaco, that the largest fresh produce market in the world is spread out: the MIN (Marché d'intérêt national). Every night, while the French are resting under their covers, thousands of little hands are busy in refrigerated pavilions at 5°, in order to supply stores, supermarkets and restaurants. An average of 6,000 tons of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish pass through Rungis each night, before ending up on our plates. Under the curious eye of the camera of "Off: Secrets et Coulisses", it is a world apart that will exceptionally open its doors to us. We will thus enter this den of Grande Bouffe, with a thousand colors and a thousand smells, from the most exotic fruits to our own local tripe. Who are the Rungis players? Who are the iconic figures who have been there since the market opened? What little-known jobs are practiced at Rungis market? Their names are Gino, Sébastien, Eddy or Elodie… They are the ones who live at night to offer our tables the best products. Some of them are true legends here. Through hard work, they dug their holes and succeeded professionally. Others have unusual jobs, such as banana ripener, veterinarian… in a cold room, teacher or tourist guide for visitors from the other side of the world. Together, they are the soul of Rungis.
