About :

Access to justice for deaf people presents significant challenges that need to be considered beyond language policies. It is not enough to ensure the linguistic rights of deaf people only through legal provisions, but also through the creation of translation and interpretation policies in different legal contexts. The lack of Libras-Portuguese interpreters and translated materials for deaf communities is still recurrent in legal institutions. Several elements are in dialogue and need to be systematized, such as the qualification of translators and interpreters, hiring, certification, and tools that assist professional practices, to name a few examples. In this sense, the panel entitled Translation Policies and Access to Justice: Beliefs, Challenges and Institutional Achievements seeks to discuss precisely the challenges faced in the implementation of translation and interpretation services and possible ways that can mitigate such obstacles. In addition, important institutional achievements will be highlighted, such as the creation of translation policies that promote the inclusion of interpreters in hearings and the training of legal professionals to deal with sign language. These initiatives not only facilitate access to information and participation in the judicial process, but also contribute to greater awareness of the rights of deaf people, promoting a more accessible and egalitarian justice system.
