In the interview with Renato Galeno, the doctor also refutes the common view of the Unified Health System (SUS), criticized for not being able to provide quality care to the entire Brazilian population. Despite this deficiency, cancer specialist Drauzio Varella states that the system is the greatest revolution in the history of Brazilian medicine. "No country with more than 100 million inhabitants has dared to offer free healthcare to everyone. It is the largest public health project in the world responsible for the greatest distribution of income ever in the country. Bolsa Família is a joke compared to SUS. The number of people who benefit from SUS is greater than the number of people who receive Bolsa Família. “Nobody discusses this aspect of income distribution,” he emphasizes in the interview with UM BRASIL, an initiative of the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP). Drauzio Varella also talks about other worrying public health issues, such as the anti-vaccine movement and the harm that a possible reduction in cigarette taxes could cause. “The anti-vaxxers are a bunch of delusional people with no scientific training whatsoever. They are committing a crime [by discouraging childhood vaccination, especially among the poorest segments of the population]. There should be an article in the penal code that punishes these people,” he criticizes.
