In the fifth part of the program #Witness_to_the_Era, #Ahmed_Mansour discusses with the former director of #Iraqi_Military_Intelligence, #Fadel_Al_Azzawi, the secret of #Soviet_support for #Saddam_Hussein in 1982, Al-Azzawi's role in that, Saddam's dispute with his half-brother #Barzan_Al-Tikriti, the former director of #Iraqi_Intelligence, between 1979 and 1983, as well as the way #Iraq was run during Saddam's rule. In the interview, Al-Azzawi spoke about his role as #Iraq's_ambassador to #Moscow, in response to a request from the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the #Soviet_Union, #Andrei_Gromyko, and the head of #Soviet_Intelligence, to mediate the release of a #Russian_detainee by Iraqi intelligence. He revealed that the compensation that Saddam Hussein requested was to supply his country with #weapons, including #surface_to_surface_missiles and #T_72 tanks. In his testimony, Al-Azzawi touched on the family problems between Saddam and his brother Barzan, which began in 1980 and erupted in 1983. He suggested that the reason for the dispute was Saddam marrying his daughter to Hussein Kamel, the former Iraqi Minister of Industrialization, while his half-brother, Sabawi Al-Tikriti, wanted her to marry his son. The dispute led to Saddam expelling Barzan from the intelligence service and giving him 24 hours to leave the Republican Palace. He then appointed Fadhil Al-Barrak, who had previously informed him about Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr, to replace him as head of the intelligence service. However, he later executed him on charges of high treason and collaborating with Israel with German mediation, despite his closeness to him to the point of asking him to marry his wife’s sister, Sajida.
