Midwifery is probably the classic women's profession. Of the approximately 27,000 midwives in Germany, only around 30 are male. In France, the situation is somewhat better. But why is it that men are so significantly underrepresented in this profession? Is it because of the expectant mothers who prefer to be accompanied by women, or because of the men who don't dare? Kilian Lanig works as a midwife at Essen University Hospital. In the maternity ward, he is there every day where new life begins. He will complete his training in 2023, as the only man in his year. He has cared for around 200 births so far - but is still the exception on the maternity ward: "The best thing would be if more men came along so that there is a normality there too." While a few dozen male midwives in Germany are still fighting to get out of the exotic corner, their colleagues in France are already a bit further ahead. Willy Belhassen has been accompanying couples and expectant mothers for almost 40 years. When the profession was opened up to men in France, he became the first male "sage-femme" in Paris. And as vice president of the largest midwifery union, he is fighting for better working conditions. The most important thing for Willy: to enable couples to have the birth they want. Offering parents the best possible care - that's what Markus Müller wants too. He was an industrial mechanic for 20 years and then decided to make a fresh start. He has been a midwife in his wife's practice for almost two years. He started there straight after his training and has now settled into his new job: "I love everything about it. Here, the focus is finally on people. In my old job, it was more about the product." The three men are pioneers. They are met with curiosity and surprised faces, rarely with skepticism.
