Due to the corona crisis, Groningen residents are walking a lot. In the 22nd episode of the City Walk, Beno Hofman and Mirre van de Klok visit the Gedempte Zuiderdiep. The Gedempte Zuiderdiep is a street in the center of Groningen. The street name contains 'diep' because it used to be a canal. In 1880, the canal was partly filled in. In this episode of the City Walk, Beno and Mirre reflect on the origins of the WEEVA. WEEVA stands for 'Woon- En Eethuis Voor Allen' (Living and Eating House for All) and was founded in 1871 for Groningen residents with a small wallet. Beno also explains where the name of café de Oude Wacht comes from. This has to do with the many buses that have been using the Zuiderdiep for years. A few buildings next to café de Oude Wacht is bar '1672'. This is named after the Groningen Relief. At the front of the building you can even find old bullets that date from this period. Beno and Mirre also stop at the old building where the Dagblad van het Noorden was located. Next week Beno and Mirre will visit the Oosterpoortwijk.
