In June 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong’s reign), the first military conflict between Joseon and the United States, the Shinmiyangyo, broke out on Ganghwa Island. General Eo Jae-yeon, who was appointed to the central army of Jinmuyeong (鎭撫營), fought fiercely against the US military with Gwangseongbo as his headquarters. The Sujagi (帥字旗) flag with the character “su” (帥), meaning general, inscribed on it, was a large flag that indicated the headquarters where the commander-in-chief was located. When Gwangseongbo fell to the US military, General Eo Jae-yeon’s flag, captured as a spoil of war, was stored at the US Naval Academy Museum and returned to Korea on October 19, 2007. In this way, General Eo Jae-yeon’s flag not only shows the past and present of Korea-US relations, but also is a valuable cultural asset that makes us reflect on the courage of our ancestors who burned with fighting spirit despite being inferior in terms of troop strength and firepower. #OverseasKoreanCulturalHeritageFoundation #Shinmiyangyo #Eojaeyeonsujagi #Shinmiyangyo150thAnniversary #EojaeyeonGeneral #sujagi #flag #OverseasCulturalHeritage #CulturalHeritage #KoreanCulturalHeritage #Geondeulgeondeul #OverseasKoreanCulturalHeritageFoundation Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation website http://www.overseaschf.or.kr/front/ma...
