The literary program “Tsakhnagi” with the column “Silhouette” offers a conversation about Pericles’ friend and associate, the treasurer of the naval union, strategos, Probulos and, most importantly, one of the main figures of antiquity, the brilliant tragedian, Sophocles. This talented creator won twenty victories in the tragic competitions during his career and, what is even more impressive, never came in third place, that is, he was never defeated once. What did Sophocles add to ancient Greek tragedy; what was the significance of his introduction of decorations to the theater; why did Sophocles add a third actor to tragedy; why did he increase the chorus from twelve to fifteen and, at the same time, why did he limit the function of the chorus; why did he portray people as they should be; Why did he include moments of recognition and transformation (anagnorismos and peripetia) in tragedy; how does he achieve purification (catharsis) through shock and compassion; why only seven of his more than one hundred tragedies have survived - these and many other questions will be answered in the program.
