Serranos is a Brazilian municipality located in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. With an area of ​​330 km², the general appearance of its territory is mountainous. Now let's look at the historical data: Serranos, whose old district was created in 1840/1891 with the name of Bom Sucesso dos Serranos, and only in 1923, the name of the city was reduced to just Serranos. At that time, it was subordinate to the municipality of Aiuruoca, until it was elevated to the category of municipality by state law no. 1039 of December 12, 1953. The first chapel was built with donations from Antônio de Oliveira, son of Domingos de Oliveira, in 1724. This is the first official document known about the current city. Antônio was considered a pious and God-fearing man, and so he set about building, certainly with great difficulty, a modest temple that was dedicated to the Baby Jesus and Our Lady of Good Success. And he submitted a request to the Bishopric of Rio de Janeiro, to which the entire territory of Minas Gerais belonged, for the construction of another chapel. Ten years after the second chapel was built, a third was built during the time of the chaplain Father Luís José de Almeida, who worked hard for the church and the local community. The Chapel of Our Lady of Bonsucesso in Serranos was a branch of the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Aiuruoca do Rio das Mortes, which has books and documents relating to the ecclesiastical records of the old chapel in Serranos, and is catalogued in the General Records Book. It was built with the support and help of the residents and, after being built, was decently adorned with four-colored ornaments. In 1788, the chaplain of Serranos wished to obtain a Plenary Indulgence for the Church of Serranos from the Holy See, and made a request to Pope Pius VI, who deigned to grant the grace, which is revalidated to this day on the jubilee day, on September 6th and 8th, through the recitation of an Our Father. The parish of Serranos is packed every year when September arrives and with it the jubilee day. This is a huge mass of faithful, which increases every year, who go to the parish to benefit from the Indulgences. At night, during the processional parade, the Praça da Matriz is acclaimed with hymns of acclamations to Mary. Important facts related to the history of Serranos: 1721 – The Tropeiros do Serro arrived 1725 – The 1st Chapel was built 1734 – The first houses were built. In the early hours of July 15th of that year, the image of Our Lady of Bonsucesso, of great artistic, emotional and historical value, was stolen.
