Commenting on the Gospel for this Tuesday of the 2nd Week of Lent, in which Jesus enters into a controversy with the Pharisees and instructs his disciples on this basis, Saint Thomas Aquinas states that Jesus directed his instruction only to the disciples and the crowds, because the Pharisees were “incorrigible.” The reason? Vanity, the terrible sin of vanity. A vain person is always concerned with what people think of him, and not with who he really is. A vain person does everything to please other people, even if, in order to do so, he has to displease God. Precisely for this reason, he becomes incorrigible. This homily was given on March 10, 2020, during the morning Mass at the Cristo Rei Parish in Várzea Grande (MT).
