I think it's to make them easier to remember and differentiate them, but most anime characters wear distinctive clothing. (It depends on the work) There are some pretty outrageous uniforms in school anime as well. The girls' uniforms at Prefectural Kita High School in "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" have outrageous colors, and the uniforms at Mitakihara Junior High School in "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" have incomprehensible cuts and jagged edges. But they're cute, so it's OK. Am I the only one who thinks that it would be nice to have uniforms that are that aggressive in the real world too? There's no particular reason why uniforms have to have that design. In the extreme, if everyone is the same, a T-shirt and shorts would be fine. Rather than designing uniforms that are similar to each other, it would be better if all schools were to go for a completely different type of clothing or make them colorful.
