■ Novelist Ango Sakaguchi. His real name was Heigo. He was born in Nishi Ohata-cho, Niigata City. He started skipping school from kindergarten and played all sorts of pranks as a kid leader. In 1926 (Taisho 15), his desire to seek the truth grew stronger and he enrolled in the Department of Indian Philosophy at Toyo University, but after harsh training he gave up on enlightenment. In 1930 (Showa 5), he founded the coterie magazine Kotoba (Words) with friends, and in June of the following year, his novel Kaze Hakase (Doctor of the Wind) was highly praised by Makino Shinichi, drawing attention from the literary world. After that, while he published fine works such as Murasaki Dainagon (Murasaki Dainagon) (1939), he continued to go through a period of misfortune in terms of public opinion, but in 1946 (Showa 21), he suddenly emerged as a popular author with the publication of Decadence Theory and The Idiot, which sharply grasped and insightfully examined the essence of the postwar period. While he was engaged in a wide range of writing activities, including novels and essays that reflected the postwar social climate, detective novels, and historical research, he also continued to attract public attention in real life, such as fighting with the National Tax Agency and exposing a case of fraud in bicycle racing. He died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage on February 17, 1955 (Showa 30). He was 48 years old. His representative novels include "Murasaki Dainagon," "Shinju," "Hakuchi," "Under the Forest of Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom," and "Yonagahime and Mimio."
