In his groundbreaking book The Culture of Narcissism, the American cultural critic Christopher Lasch describes how a society obsessed with self-image and personal satisfaction leads to moral decay. Lasch paints a sharp portrait of the late modern man, trapped in a vicious circle of consumption, therapy and self-development – at the expense of solidarity and community spirit. More than 40 years later, the most powerful countries in the world are led by narcissists, self-help books are raining down and everyone has a coach. Do we now live completely in the narcissistic culture described by Lasch? And is there a way back? During this evening we will discuss the lasting influence of The Culture of Narcissism. What does this work mean for our time, and what answers does it offer to contemporary issues surrounding individualism, technology, gender and social cohesion? Christopher Lasch (1932 – 1994) was an American author, cultural critic, and lecturer in History at Rochester University. Lash wrote much-discussed books such as The Culture of Narcissism, The True and Only Heaven (1991), and The Revolt of the Elites: And the Betrayal of Democracy (1996), in which he showed himself to be a critic of liberalism and capitalism. Speakers: Joost de Vries is a writer of essays and novels, most recently Hogere machten (Higher Powers). In 2023 he received the Frans Kellendonk Prize for his oeuvre. Since 2005 he has written for De Groene Amsterdammer, where he has also been deputy editor-in-chief in recent years. In January he will leave for De Volkskrant to set up a new section full of essays and literature. Margriet van Heesch is a cultural scientist affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. In her teaching and research she analyzes intersex and gender issues, gender studies, queer studies, LGBTQI, sexuality, and love. She has published in NRC, De Gids, and De Correspondent and wrote De Kleine Butler (2024, Atlas Contact) about philosopher Judith Butler. Lena Bril is a journalist and researches therapy culture in the Netherlands. Her reports and essays have appeared in De Groene Amsterdammer and Trouw, among others. Her debut In Therapy will be published in 2025. Mark Lievisse Adriaanse is a journalist at NRC Handelsblad and is working on a book about the erosion of democracy.
