In AD 177, the people of Lyon, the capital of Gaul, today France, went after the Christians in the city. It had been a difficult time for the people of southern Gaul, who had suffered frequent enemy raids and a deadly plague. To the pagans, the Christians’ refusal to worship deities had aroused the fury of the gods. Long-standing prejudices escalated into riots. Residents assaulted Christians and dragged them into the public square. Eventually, the Christians were condemned for not following the demands of the authorities. Some were executed, while others, such as Pothinus (87–177), the Bishop of Lyon, died in prison. In the wake of this nightmare, a young man named Irenaeus, who was probably traveling, returned to collect the rubble. As Pothinus’ successor, he was faced with all the questions: how to care for widows and orphans, console the suffering, encourage deserters, ease fears, and promote unity? In this video, a summary of the life of Irenaeus of Lyons (130-202).
