The railway tunnel of Aukštejų Paneriė is one of the two railway tunnels in Lithuania. Built in 1861, the 427-meter-long, 8-meter-wide, and 6.4-meter-high tunnel is no longer used for its intended purpose - over time, the brickwork began to deteriorate, and its vaults were in danger of collapsing. After conducting research, it was decided not to repair, but to install a detour through the nearby hill. Therefore, after almost 100 years of operation, the railway tracks were dismantled in 1960, the tunnel was closed and, according to unconfirmed data, an attempt was made to close it by blowing it up. Indeed, the tunnel is currently collapsed in three places, but it is difficult to say whether these are the consequences of the blasting or whether the vault could not withstand the burden of the year. These collapses have formed separate chambers of a kind, where the temperature fluctuates slightly, the temperature remains plus in winter and it is sufficiently humid. This was appreciated by bats, and their choice by environmentalists: : Aukštųių Panerių tunnelis by the Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Lithuania in 2005. June 15 by order no. D1-302 has been declared an area of importance for the protection of habitats (BAST) as a wintering site for the peat mouse-ear (Myotis dasycneme) listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive. The territory of the tunnel is also part of the landscape reserve of the Paneriai erosive hill, established by the Vilnius City Council, and is protected as a cultural heritage value.
