Whether out of excitement, during sport or just like that, everyone has felt and certainly heard their heart beating. And so it pumps around 5-6 liters of blood per minute, or around 7,200 liters a day. In just one minute, our heart pumps the entire volume of blood through the entire body through rhythmic contractions. The heart, the engine of life. Oxygen, water, nutrients, hormones but also toxins - the bloodstream transports all of these vital but also bad substances through our body. This circulation is kept going by our "engine", the heart. A healthy heart weighs on average between 300 and 500 grams and is about the size of a fist. It is located in the middle of the chest in the so-called pericardium. This is a sac of connective tissue that is firmly attached to the diaphragm and is located in the thorax. 2/3 of the heart is to the left of the breastbone, a third is to the right of it. The two lungs are to the right and left of it, and the breastbone and the esophagus and windpipe frame it to the front and back. The heart is tilted slightly to the left and back so that the tip of the heart is at the level of the left nipple. The heart is roughly divided into 4 segments. The cardiac septum runs lengthways through the heart and separates the right and left halves of the heart from each other. You could also say that our engine has 2 pumps, i.e. halves of the heart, that beat in the same rhythm and are separated by the cardiac septum mentioned above. The halves each consist of a left and a right ventricle and the corresponding atria. In the video I go into detail about - the structure, anatomy and function of the heart - the structure and function of the circulatory system (small and large circulation) - heart valves, atria and ventricles and much more.
