The first of these is attributed to Orpheus, who participates in the campaign and was recorded in the 6th century BC, by a group of scholars of the time, during the reign of Peisistratides, in Athens. The second poem belongs to Apollonius of Rhodes and was written in the 3rd century BC. It is worth noting that the return journey of Argos is described completely differently in these two works. In our work under the title "The Argonautica Orphica version for the voyage of the Argonauts: a geo-analysis" (MAA, Vol. 17, no. 2, p.77-95, 2017) we analyzed the route of the Argonauts based on older text. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The journey starts from the foothills of Pelion, Iolkos and reaches the Phasis River, Colchis of the Black Sea (present-day Georgia). After the acquisition of the "golden fleece" and the death of Apsyrtos, son of King Aetis, Argo, due to bad calculations, heads towards the sources of the river, in Mount Caucasus which it crosses, through rivers and finally reaches the Maiotida lake (Azov sea). From there the course continues through the shores of the Pontus, the Danube River (Istros) and then the Rhine River, so Argo is in the "Cronius Pelagos", sailing the Atlantic Ocean. Following the flow of the text and estimating journey duration and distances, we "traced" the path of Argos to Gibraltar (Heraklion Steles), locating the island of Demeter, on the island of Madeira and the "home" of Circe, on the Essaouira peninsula of Morocco. On the journey into the Mediterranean and to the south of Sicily (Lilyvaios Port), the Argonauts meet Charybdis and the Sirens. The whole description perfectly fits the eruption of an undersea volcano, which is common for this area that is littered with active volcanic craters. Argo then reaches Corfu and then heads towards the Ambraki Gulf, when strong northerly winds sent her to the Gulf of Sirte (Africa). After adventures (but which are not described) they finally arrived in Crete and crossing, with great difficulty, the Cretan Sea, they found themselves in Anafi. Finally, they returned to Iolkos, having previously left Orpheus at Cape Tainaro in the Peloponnese, in order to perform purification at the entrance to Hades located there. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- SPEAKER'S BIOGRAPHY Biography of Professor Panagiotas Prekas-Papadimas: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16Kn9. .. ------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- The FRYKTORIES would like to thank Mrs. Panagiota Preka-Papadima and the Society for the Study of Ancient Greek Mythology (E.M.A.E.M.). -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- You can watch all the speeches organized by EMAEM and filmed by Fryktorias, at the link: • EMAEM speeches (Society for the Study of Antiquities. ..
