Particularly popular: nougat Easter eggs. They are available as cheap treats from discount stores or as expensive branded products. Is it worth spending more money on the nougat egg? Or can you put the cheap ones in the Easter nest without hesitation? Marktcheck is testing together with chocolatier Kevin Kugel from Sindelfingen. THE NOUGAT CHOCOLATE EGGS IN THE TEST During a blind tasting, the chocolatier and two other chocolate fans tried the chocolate Easter eggs. While Lindt is in the upper price category at 3.32 euros, the nougat eggs from Milka at 2.21 euros and Moser Roth (Aldi) at 1.19 euros are in the cheaper price range. The cheapest Easter eggs tested are 0.99 euros and come from Riegelein. Also included: an organic product from Alnatura for 2.79 euros. THE BEST NOUGAT CHOCOLATE EGG The winners in terms of taste are the eggs from Riegelein. They were also the cheapest in the test. Directly behind them are the chocolate eggs from Lindt and Milka in the middle field and the losers of the test are the nougat Easter eggs from Alnatura and Aldi. Unfortunately, they were not convincing in terms of taste. WHAT MAKES THE PRODUCTION OF HUT NOUGAT SO SPECIAL? What is particularly important in nougat is a light sweetness with a roasted nut aroma and a fine consistency. For nut nougat, roasted hazelnuts are mixed with sugar and chocolate. The higher the nut content, the more characteristic the taste and consistency. FATS, HAZELNUTS AND MILK POWDER Manufacturers such as Lindt and Aldi often add palm fat or clarified butter to the nougat mass. These fats are intended to ensure that the chocolate melts smoothly on the tongue. Alnatura uses sunflower oil. The hazelnut content is also an important factor. This is ultimately what gives the nougat its nutty taste. Customers often do not know exactly where the hazelnuts come from. The Aldi chocolate egg, for example, contains 13 percent hazelnuts, while the nougat filling in the Lindt egg is 15 percent and that of Riegelein even contains 26 percent hazelnuts. To achieve a lighter color for the egg, manufacturers also often add buttermilk powder or skimmed milk powder. For example, in the Moser Roth egg from Aldi or the egg from Alnatura. CULTIVATION OF COCOA BEANS AND NUTS Cocoa cultivation is often criticized. The income of cocoa farmers is said to be too low and the working conditions in the fields too poor. Lindt and Milka have their own cultivation program and advertise the Fairtrade seal on their packaging. Alnatura also sources its own beans from fair trade. But it remains questionable whether the cocoa farmers have a sufficient income through the seals. Cocoa expert Friedel Hütz-Adams believes that although the farmers receive premiums through the seals, these are far too low. The same applies to the cultivation of hazelnuts, which are used in nougat. 80 percent of the hazelnuts come from Turkey.
