On April 15, 2019, one of France's most famous landmarks was ablaze: Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The huge fire also penetrated the vaults and weakened the limestone walls. After a year of cleanup and securing work, the danger of collapse was averted and the historically accurate reconstruction of the cathedral could begin. Given the unprecedented scale of the work ahead of them, architects and scientists began examining the blocks of the collapsed medieval vault, the stones of which formed the heart of the damaged structure of the cathedral. In order to understand the arrangement and structure of the hundreds of blocks that had fallen from the vaults, the researchers collected the material for months. Since there are hardly any texts about the creation of the cathedral and the course of the medieval construction work, the scientists had to re-acquire more than 800 years of know-how based on their own discoveries. No architect today has ever had to deal with the reconstruction of arches and medieval vaults of such dimensions. In fact, the vaults of Notre-Dame are the key to the entire statics and structure of the cathedral. Faced with this considerable challenge, on which the continued existence of the cathedral depended, special 3D software was developed to decipher the medieval church architecture. Notre-Dame de Paris has survived eight centuries of turbulent history. Will the restorers now succeed in preserving the church for the centuries to come?
