One day the barber Ivan Iakovlevici finds the nose of one of his customers in the bread that his wife, Praskovia Osipova, baked for him. Surprised, even scared, he puts his nose in his pocket and goes out into the street to get away from him. The owner of the nose is college assessor Kovalev, who, waking up, realized that he was left without a nose. The man feels cramped, as he imagines that his new appearance would create problems for him in society... The climax is that his Nose comes to life and rides around town in his carriage, telling everyone that he is a state councillor. Irritated by the situation, Kovalev asks the neighborhood commissioner for help, but she fails to resolve the situation. The rescue comes from the guard who had arrested him earlier and brings his nose back...
