The Nieuwkoopse Plassen form a link in the series of waters in the west of our country. Although the Netherlands once consisted largely of lowland peat, such extensive lowland peat areas and their special plants and animals are not very common these days. The current populations of the special purple heron, green-winged orchid and northern vole are among the most important in the Netherlands. This gives the Nieuwkoopse Plassen great (Dutch and European) value.
