Recording of a lecture from the cycle SHAKESPEARE AND HIS TIME, presented by the Municipal Library in Prague, in cooperation with the British Council, in the large hall of the Central Library on February 13, 2020, this time on the topic: Antonius and Cleopatra. At the center of this play are Antony and Cleopatra and the famous tragic story of their love. It takes place against the background of two worlds: Rome and Egypt - at a moment of historical turning point. Shakespeare's Rome is the world of powerful imperial politics, Egypt is also associated with wars and conquest, but it also symbolizes the garden of earthly pleasures. Professor Martin Hilský will show what had the greatest influence on the creation of this supreme play, which stands on the border between tragedy and romance, and will explain why Shakespeare did not succumb to the ideas of the time when creating this work and how he changed the characters of the main characters. Lecturer: Prof. PhDr. Martin Hilský, CSc., top Englishman, translator, essayist, professor of English literature, who translated Shakespeare's entire work into Czech. He is the holder of a number of important awards - e.g. Order of the British Empire, State Prize for Translation, Czech Head, Vojtěch Náprstek Medal and many others.
