In 2024, it will be 500 years since the birth of one of the most important writers in the Portuguese language: Luís Vaz de Camões. In this video, I talk about the life of Camões and his most important work, The Lusiads. The Lusiads was one of the most important books owned by Dom Pedro II. His copy, which he had brought from Petrópolis to take into exile, is now in the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute and is the only known copy with the author's autograph. This work was almost used as a bargaining chip for the body of Dom Pedro I to be brought to Brazil in 1972. Also, at that time, The Lusiads, and Camões, ended up becoming a symbol of the fight against press censorship in Brazil during the dictatorship. I tell these and many other stories in this video.
