Lecture by Anna Bronovitskaya "Bureau SANAA. Mastery of Ephemeral Architecture" within the framework of J-FEST Autumn 2020. The lecture is dedicated to the legendary Japanese architectural bureau SANAA (Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates), which managed to update the architectural language of modernism at the beginning of the 21st century, reminding the world of the Japanese roots of modern architecture. The founders of the bureau - partners Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa - bring the delicacy of structural elements to the point of seeming impossibility, deceive the eye with mirror polishing of metal, build labyrinths of bent glass and pack volumes in a white metal mesh. Following the ancient Japanese culture of observing nature, they work on projects, responding to the nuances of each specific location, and often construct their buildings in the manner of architectural landscapes. Extremely closed and shy away from advertising (the bureau’s website consists of one white page with an email address), they receive important orders on different continents and collect many prestigious awards. Anna Bronovitskaya is a PhD in art history and a specialist in modernist architecture. In 2004–2014, she worked as an editor for the architectural magazine “Project International,” covering contemporary international practice. Since 2015, she has lectured on 20th-century architecture at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art.
