※ This video is part of <Extreme Job - Ship Scrapping Team Part 1-2> broadcast from June 17 to 18, 2009, and may differ from the current situation. ▶ Dismantle a 300-ton cargo ship! It's easy to think that scrapping a ship means haphazardly destroying the ship, but the experience and know-how of handling ships for at least 10 years are the most important tasks. One of the most nerve-racking tasks in ship scrapping is selecting and disassembling recyclable machinery. However, as if to say that the scrapped ship is decades old, the thick rust on the equipment is firmly stuck to the hull, making it no easy task to remove it one by one. Even equipment that could be sold for a high price can be damaged if not careful, so even veteran cutters put extra effort into their work... ▶ A battle with 1,200-degree flames and the scorching heat! Hard work on a scrap ship that quickly heats up under the scorching midday sun. In order to process hundreds of tons of scrapped ships, manual work is essential, using an oxygen cutter that emits 1,200-degree flames to melt and cut the scrap metal one by one. The workers’ faces are covered in black soot from the acrid smoke emitted by the oxygen cutter, and their work clothes and underwear are always riddled with holes due to the sparks flying all over their bodies. And the scars left all over the workers’ faces speak volumes about their hardships. ▶ No entry unless you are a skilled worker! The extremely dangerous work site. The experience and expertise of the workers are more important than anything else in the scrapped ship processing work because it is such a dangerous job. Hundreds of kilograms of scrap metal can fall anywhere at any time, and if the ship is cut incorrectly, hundreds of tons of scrapped ships can lose their balance and fall over. The work site is filled with tension as the foreman shouts, wondering if the huge pile of scrap metal could threaten the safety of the workers. ▶ Continuous tension, salvage operation of a 250-ton decommissioned ship The first task to dismantle a ship that has reached the end of its lifespan at sea is to salvage the ship to land. Tugboats and deep-sea divers have been mobilized to begin the tense work. During the process of raising the ship, if the center of gravity is lost or the rope breaks due to the weight of the ship, it could lead to a fatal accident, and the veteran workers’ faces are filled with tension. ▶ Fighting with dust and smoke, secure a breathing hole first! In hot weather like midsummer, the work continues under all kinds of adverse conditions, including the loud noises of various machines, dust from old decommissioned ships, and acrid smoke. If cutting work is done inside the ship using an oxygen cutter, the air may not pass through, which could lead to suffocation for the workers. Therefore, in order to cut the main body, it is urgent to secure a minimum safe working environment by drilling breathing holes in various places. However, as the cutter goes inside to secure the breathing holes, smoke begins to rise in an instant inside the tightly clogged hull. ▶ 40 years of father's work. The final work site of the scrapyard for a 300-ton cargo ship, where scrap metal, non-ferrous metal, and waste are separated and a ship is dismantled without a trace. There is someone who watches this work site more closely than anyone else. Mr. Heo Sam-rim, who has been doing this work for 41 years, started this work to make a living right after giving birth to his eldest daughter, who is already 42 years old. It is a job that everyone avoids now, but he has built a family here and maintained his father's position. And he says he will not leave this site as long as his health allows... ✔ Program name: Extreme Job - Scrapyard Scrapyard Part 1-2 ✔ Broadcast date: 2009.06.17~18 #TVViewingCholladaeDocumentary #ExtremeJob #Ship #ShipDismantling #Busan #Scrapyard #LargeShip #Ship #CargoShip
