Contact: [email protected] Well, you talked about philosophy, and now please say something about women in Islam. I have heard this many times at conferences, regardless of the topic – says Prof. Katarzyna Pachniak, Head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw, on the Scientific Radio. The topic of the situation of women in Muslim countries is as popular as it is complex. - The position of women in different countries is very different in terms of the place that religion occupies in these countries. There are more orthodox countries, there are more modern countries. It really varies a lot. Of course, it was also different in previous eras – emphasizes the researcher. It is known that Islam places great emphasis on the issue of physicality. - A woman is to be dressed modestly and is an important determinant of a man's honor. The honor of a man, the honor of the tribe, depends on her virginity, on whether she gives birth to a child for her husband or someone else. In fact, we can even say that a man's honor hangs on this thin hymen of a woman – says Prof. Pachniak. At the same time, according to Islam, women have the right to sexual satisfaction. – A woman had and has the right to demand that a man satisfy her, that she experience pleasure in the bedroom, that she be appreciated. In other words, she was not supposed to be just an object. And sexuality is still part of, it may seem like a paradox to us, religious life – he emphasizes. What is more, a woman is not responsible for the financial status of the family. - If she got married and was wealthy from home, she did not have to spend her wealth on maintaining the house. It was entirely the domain of the man. If she wanted to, she could, if not, she could not – explains Prof. Pachniak. Young men in Muslim countries often have to take out loans to be able to afford a wedding. An ideal situation, right? A secure existence, peace, care, appreciation. One "snag": lack of freedom. – These are very difficult conversations with Muslim theologians, because they claim that after all, a woman has it great, she is completely under the care of a man. And when they argue that she cannot decide for herself, because she has to ask this man or, for example, her father for permission to work professionally, this is not an argument for them. "You are poor, that you have to work professionally at all," they respond - she reports. In the podcast, we touch on a lot of topics: is Islam anti-women at its foundations? Is this a patriarchal interpretation? Who and why mentally stopped in the 7th century. It is Islamic feminism, honor crimes, the drama of Afghan women and fighting Iranian women. And also: what would happen if Catholic bishops could freely legislate? I highly recommend it! ???? Preparing each episode takes many hours of work.
