Long-term care facilities for the elderly (LTCF) are environments designed for the collective residence of people aged 60 and over. They are places that can provide comprehensive care for the elderly and also allow them to socialize with other elderly people. Despite these potential benefits, LTCFs, unfortunately, are still viewed with great distrust and prejudice by the elderly and their families. This is due to the strong stigma that LTCFs still carry as “nursing homes” or “warehouses for abandoned elderly people”. This is an old view and linked to institutions that, in fact, were very precarious in the past. In addition to this stigma, family members may still resist institutionalizing the elderly because they believe that this will mean giving up on caring for their loved ones. In this new episode of the Envelhecer com Saúde Podcast, Daniel Gomes and Rafael Duncam have a very enlightening chat with Dr. Sandra Broto, geriatrician and founding partner of an LTCF, Lar Davis. In this informative conversation, they talk about what ILPIs are, what situations we should consider institutionalizing the elderly and why ILPIs should be seen as AN OPTION and not just as THE LAST OPTION for elderly care. It was really cool. It's worth checking out.
