In order to prevent the ghost from wandering after death, they wrap a young hawthorn shoot around the neck of the deceased, and drive a nail from a harrow or three iron nails into the heart. To ward off Evil, they also cut off the head and place it face down, at the feet (...). Before the funeral, they put a spoonful of poppy seeds or a mugful or a pint in his mouth, so that he would not rise from the grave.
