※ This video is part of the December 31, 2009 broadcast of <Extreme Job - Mountain Suspension Bridge Installation 1-2>. Daedunsan Mountain is 878m above sea level. It is famous for its rugged terrain due to the many rocks compared to its height, but the scenery is also outstanding, so hikers keep coming. Among them, the place that boasts the most beautiful scenery is Surak Falls. However, due to frequent rockfalls on the Surak Falls hiking trail, the existing hiking trail has been closed, and construction is currently underway to install a mountain suspension bridge that connects valleys and valleys, 50m in the air. It is a dangerous task performed in the air 50m high, relying only on a 2m wide safety net and a single rope. Let's visit the dizzying work site of these people who risk their lives for the safety of hikers. Install a 680kg cable 50m in the air! This is the third suspension bridge to be installed on Daedunsan Mountain, and is 54m long and 1m wide, 50m high. This sky bridge is constructed with concrete main towers on both sides, and the cables connected to the main towers hold up the deck. Among these, the work of connecting the main cable to the main tower is the most important and dangerous work during the construction of a mountain sky bridge. The main cable alone weighs 680 kg, but since it is a mountainous area where large cranes cannot enter, the arduous work is ultimately done manually. With only a safety hook attached to a simple wire connected to the main tower, the 9-hour high-altitude work is done in the air. The wire spins around and around even when the wind blows, making it difficult to even control one’s body. The dizzying high-altitude work continues, just watching it. People passing the cliff every morning. Workers have to leave their accommodations at 7 a.m. every morning. After driving to the entrance of the mountain, they have to walk up the steep and dangerous mountain path for over 30 minutes to get to the work site. It is truly a torture to climb the mountain path to the work site, which is located 430 m above sea level, while carrying a load full of equipment on a back is difficult. The weight of the equipment carried on the back of the cart is a whopping 60kg. The basic materials were transported by helicopter, but the workers are solely responsible for packing and transporting the equipment needed for each day’s work. Because of the sweat pouring down like rain as they climb, the workers take off their jumpers and start climbing the mountain despite the cold of midwinter. Although it is a daily climb, it is not easy to pass through the rough rocks and climb the 303 steps. Moreover, if they lose their balance, there is a risk of falling off a thousand-foot cliff... Will they be able to climb the mountain safely today? Even a 0.1mm error is not allowed! The work site is not even close to having enough space to stand. For the workers, a cup of coffee after lunch and a brief moment of sunbathing on the overhead net are all they can rest. However, the rest is short-lived, as the main cable that they worked so hard to install is not normal. Since this is a cloud bridge that is responsible for the safety of climbers, even a 0.1mm error is not allowed for safety. However, the main cable is not the right length. The workers walk around the aerial net installed between the valleys to check the length, and then gather their strength to adjust the main cable length again. However, it is not easy to adjust the 680kg main cable in the air. In the end, they have to install the scaffolding again, and in the midst of their busy schedule, the workers get their hands caught in the wire or get hurt on their faces. The work is getting slower, and the sun sets even faster on the mountain... Will they be able to install the main cable safely? A series of incidents, a struggle with the beams The work of installing the beams that will become the floors for the climbers to walk on is also done entirely by hand in the mountains. Twenty 70kg beams are moved to each location using only pulleys and ropes. Then, they assemble the beams on the net while hanging from the wires. It is not easy to maintain balance while working in the air, and the work is even more dangerous because there is a thousand-foot cliff below the net. However, on the second day of installing the beams, an absurd incident occurred. The newly installed beam was ordered incorrectly and there are no holes for bolts. Since it is in the mountains, a helicopter must be mobilized to replace a beam that weighs over 70 kg, but there is no room for this, either economically or with the current work schedule. In the end, the workers decide to drill holes themselves and start drilling over 20 holes per beam... The workers solve problems that arise in extreme situations by hand in an isolated mountain. Their struggles continue. Extreme work against the cold It is so cold that even the thermometer is frozen. They wear layers of socks and several layers of clothing, but there is no escape from the wind blowing from the valley and the biting cold. Their breath is so thick that it covers their faces, and their bangs quickly freeze from the sweat. Because of the snow that fell the night before, a gas stove is mobilized to melt it, and the work is stopped several times due to the slippery roads and frozen hands. After a hard morning of work, lunchtime is right around the corner. Thanks to the warm lunch boxes delivered by the inn owner, the workers are able to briefly relax their bodies and minds. After the meal, the worker ends up shedding tears while video chatting with his daughter who just turned one... We meet the hot scene of the mountain bridge installation, which has been going on for months in the mountains and the dangers lurking everywhere. The new path for hikers, the deck installation, and the railing cables that will hold the gap between the railings and prevent those passing the bridge from falling are in full swing. This is also a task that the workers have to do by hand, from moving the railing cables to connecting them. After meticulously installing the ropes at 2m intervals, they have to squat down on the aerial net and weld them to connect the 150cm-high stainless steel pipes. Even taking a single step 50m above the ground is difficult, and the teamwork that has been going on for more than 10 years continues smoothly. Their life-or-death work continues for the safety of hikers. ✔ Program name: Extreme Job - Mountain suspension bridge installation ✔ Broadcast date: 2009.12.31 #GolladyeonDocumentary #ExtremeJob #Construction #Site
