What role do fascia play in our body, why are they often responsible for back pain and what significance do they have in sport? We have investigated these and other questions relating to the subject of back, muscles and fascia. The back is a complicated structure and many things can throw the spine and intervertebral discs out of alignment and cause pain. A new focus: the connective tissue, the so-called fascia. In contrast to vertebrae, intervertebral discs and the like, fascia was not considered to be the cause of back pain for a long time. As connective tissue fibers, however, fascia can harden and mat, which can result in great pain. In this article, we explain what function fascia has in our body and why fascia also plays a major role in professional sport. Among other things, we met Klaus Eder, the physiotherapist for the German national football team, and looked over his shoulder as he worked with the footballers' fascia.
