Let's fasten our seatbelts and go!! In the previous video I explained how to safely enter the motorway, in this one I will explain how to exit the motorway. As usual, we will first see the manoeuvre performed step by step, then we will get into the car to see it live, and finally I will make a summary by putting all the things to do in order, so as to memorise WELL how they should be done. This final part will also be the most important to be able to memorise everything I explained during the video. On the highway we will be going at a speed of about one hundred kilometers per hour, at least if we are taking a driving test, and let's imagine that at a certain point the examiner says "at the next exit we go off the highway". What should we do? First of all, let's start looking for the sign that will warn us that we are five hundred meters from the exit. When we are close to that sign, we will check the right mirror to make sure there is no one next to us, you never know, and we will turn on the right indicator to warn everyone of our intention to exit. However, this is not the moment when we should start slowing down: we are still on the highway and doing so would be very dangerous. So we will continue to hold the accelerator, maintaining the speed of about one hundred kilometers per hour, even if the survival instinct would make us start slowing down now, but we must not do it yet!! Let's stay to the right of our lane, taking as a reference, for example, the line that separates it from the emergency lane. As soon as the deceleration lane begins, we must move immediately and completely inside it, then immediately begin to slow down with the brake; but be careful, not by stepping on it, but by pressing it delicately so as to have a constant and smooth slowdown. And the better we brake, the better we will be able to downshift. In fact, in the meantime, as the speed decreases, we will also have to downshift, thus also using the braking action of the engine. So, assuming we are in fifth gear: while holding the brakes, we will press the clutch to engage fourth, after which we will lift the clutch again and put our hand back on the steering wheel; then clutch down, fourth, clutch up and hand on the steering wheel; then we will press the clutch again and engage third, then lift the clutch again and put our right hand back on the steering wheel; then clutch down, third, clutch up and hand on the steering wheel Now it will be enough to reach a speed of about fifty kilometers per hour, or a little less depending on the characteristics of the road and the maximum speed foreseen, then release the brake and turn off the indicator, which we could have already turned off once we entered the deceleration lane if we wanted; but I prefer that at that moment, at least the first few times you exit the highway, you concentrate on braking and downshifting. I want to point out that what I have described is the technique to use to exit the highway in a driving test.
