On Friday, March 23, a forestry training event on the topic of root-friendly planting took place in the state forestry garden in Werfen: The organizers were the Maschinenring Salzburg in cooperation with the state forestry garden in Werfen. The event was intended as a training event for MR workers and for all interested forest farmers. In Salzburg, several thousand hectares of forest areas are planted every year through reforestation, pre-cultivation or initial afforestation. The labor- and cost-intensive measures are intended to lead to long-term success, especially against the background of climate change. To do this, numerous quality assurance measures and important influencing factors must be taken into account in advance. At this event, we presented practical tips on preparation, plant quality, plant transfer and root pruning as well as aftercare for successful cultivation. The guest speaker was the Upper Bavarian forestry master Sepp Wolf from the Bavarian State Forests, who conveyed his extensive specialist knowledge in a tried and tested, entertaining manner. Dominik Posch, head of the state forestry garden, then led us through the area and explained the different work steps. Conclusion of the event: • Improper planting leads to irreparable root deformations. This leads to instability • Proper root pruning is necessary • The planting method must be adapted to the root formation of the forest plant and not the other way around. The appropriate planting method is very important for long-term stability. The development of the root system in terms of structure and size should determine the planting method. The aim must be to place roots in the soil that are as undisturbed (unpruned) as possible without deformations.
