Let's take a closer look at the tragic events of the fall of 1944 - the escape of tens of thousands of people from their homeland from the Soviet occupation. Along with the pre- and post-events. The Swedish state's attitude towards Estonian refugees. In addition to the loss of independence, the Second World War, which broke out in 1939, meant the loss of several hundred thousand lives for Estonia. Throughout the war, they were exiled abroad from the occupation authorities, but the exodus from the homeland became especially massive in the fall of 1944. Estonia was then threatened by a new Soviet occupation. Braving the stormy sea, approx. 80,000 people fled Estonia, of whom around 27,000 reached the neutral Kingdom of Sweden. Unfortunately, the trials were not over for these people, and the brief exile lasted decades instead!
