Today, Otepää is a municipal town with a few thousand inhabitants (winter capital since 1996) within Valgamaa. During the Second World War, however, the city of Otepää belonged to the southern part of Tartumaa. In 1922, the former Nuustaku town was named Otepää town at the suggestion of the folklorist Matthias Johann Eisen. However, in April 1936, Otepää received city rights. The Second World War significantly changed the appearance of Otepää in August 1944, when the confrontation between the German and Soviet forces ended with the burning of a significant part of the city center.
