The Château de Commarque is a fortified castle located in the commune of Les Eyzies, in the French department of Dordogne, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The history of this site begins in 15,000 BC. Various remains bear witness to this in a cave under the castle, inaccessible to the public. From 6,000 BC until the Middle Ages, troglodyte dwellings sheltered men and livestock all around the site. Construction of the castle began in the 12th century. Construction continued in the 14th century. At the end of the 16th century, the entire site was abandoned. For the next four centuries, it was used as a stone quarry and a dense forest completely covered the various buildings. In 1942, a rescue site was set up. Since 1962, Hubert de Commarque has been responsible for the restoration of the site as well as archaeological excavations in order to make this monumental complex accessible to the public. Nowadays, the public can visit this remarkable site several months a year. Thanks to the owner of the place for accepting its flight over so that I could make my audiovisual production.
